What a South African CV should include

A good entry-level CV fits on one page and is easy to read on a phone. Every template on this page follows the same order, so you can start with the one closest to the job you want and change what does not apply to you.

  • Contact details: Your full name, a phone or WhatsApp number, your email address, and your suburb and town. Employers need one reliable way to reach you.
  • Personal summary: Two or three sentences on who you are, what work you want, and that you are reliable and willing to learn.
  • Education: Your matric school and year, your NQF level if you know it, and any short courses or certificates.
  • Work experience: Most recent job first, with the job title, the place you worked, the dates, and what you did every day.
  • Informal work and gaps: Piece jobs, spaza shop help, weekend work and volunteering all count. If you have a gap in your history, explain it honestly in one line.
  • Skills and references: A short list of skills that match the job, and the name, phone number and relationship of people who can vouch for you.
