Requirements

Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery. Registration with a professional council: Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery. Experience: Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in General Surgery. Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate 299 experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as Medical Specialist in General Surgery. Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as Medical Specialist in General Surgery. Inherent requirements of the job: Valid driver’s license (Code B/EB) and willingness to travel in the district. Competencies (knowledge/skills): Knowledge and understanding of Health Care 2030. Excellent administrative and research skills. Computer literacy in MS Office. Clinical competencies (training and teaching skills.)

Duties

The successful candidate will report to the Medical Manager / Clinical Manager of the District Hospital and support the planning, governance and development of surgical services. Provide specialist General Surgery services at the District Hospital, including outpatient consultations, inpatient care, theatre services, minor procedures and management of complex surgical patients. Provide clinical leadership and governance for surgical services, including the development and monitoring of clinical protocols, referral pathways, quality- improvement initiatives and evidence-based standards of care. Provide supervision, mentoring and clinical support to Medical Officers, Community Service Medical Officers, interns and other health professionals, and support ongoing training and development of clinical competence. Strengthen access to appropriate surgical care through improved patient selection, theatre utilisation, waiting-list management and management of suitable patients closer to home. Conduct and support clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, patient-safety initiatives and other quality-assurance activities relevant to surgical services. Liaise with surgical specialists and subspecialists at Regional and Tertiary Hospitals to strengthen referral, counter-referral, specialist outreach and shared management of patients. Support the decentralisation of surgical services through outreach, specialist clinics, procedural support, case discussions and clinical mentoring aimed at building local capacity. Participate in the training of health professionals and in research relevant to the clinical and service needs of the district.
