Requirements
Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Registration with a professional council: Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Experience: Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional 300 Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Inherent requirement of the job: Valid driver’s license (Code B/EB) and willingness to travel in the district. Competencies (knowledge/skills): Knowledge and understanding of Health Care 2030. Excellent administrative and research skills. Computer literacy in MS Office. Clinical competencies (training and teaching skills.)
Duties
The successful candidate will report to the Medical Manager / Clinical Manager of the District Hospital and support the planning, governance and development of clinical services. Provide specialist Internal Medicine services at the District Hospital, including ward rounds, outpatient consultations, management of complex medical patients and specialist support to other clinical disciplines. Provide clinical leadership and governance for Internal Medicine services, including the development and monitoring of clinical protocols, referral pathways, quality-improvement initiatives and evidence-based standards of care. Provide supervision, mentoring and clinical support to Medical Officers, Community Service Medical Officers, interns and other health professionals, and support ongoing training and development of clinical competence. Support the management of complex and chronic medical conditions and strengthen continuity of care between the hospital, Primary Health Care services and higher levels of care. Conduct and support clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, patient-safety initiatives and other quality- assurance activities relevant to Internal Medicine. Liaise with specialists and subspecialists at Regional and Tertiary Hospitals to strengthen referral, counter-referral, specialist outreach and shared management of patients. Support the decentralisation of specialist services through outreach, specialist clinics, case discussions and clinical mentoring aimed at building local capacity and managing appropriate patients closer to home. Participate in the training of health professionals and in research relevant to the clinical and service needs of the district.
